Alex Kirby, PsyD

Dr. Alex Kirby understands, literally, what it means to walk in his client’s shoes. Since 1993, Alex has worked in human services, doing everything from hiking in the woods as a field guide alongside troubled teens, to performing assessment and treatment planning for impaired professionals. Alex has counseled both kids and their families as a wilderness therapist. Later, as the Executive Director of a residential treatment program, he helped concerned parents navigate their child’s time at the program, as well as planning for next steps.

Alex has always had the knack for quickly establishing a rapport with his charges and their parents. He is known for his uncanny ability to instill hope in adolescents, young adults and their parents, even when faced with the most dire of therapeutic moments. Alex is well-known for his collaborative work with those in need to create practical, manageable near- and long-term solutions.

Alex and his wife have three children. He has the lived, personal experience of what it means for parents to face the challenges of raising a struggling child, as well as the rewards that come from learning to parent differently.

Alex completed his Pre-Doctoral Internship at Vanderbilt University/Department of Veterans Affairs Consortium Nashville, and received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. His particular areas of expertise include addressing the impacts of substance abuse disorders upon family systems, as well as the dynamics of adoptive families.
